Winter Climbing?...

Well it's that time of year that I start getting all fired up for some winter climbing and on a slight chance that it might be just cold enough, I drove off to meet up with Dave at Helyg hut in the Ogwen Valley in North Wales. I arrived first and got going with the fire. Dave soon arrived and we both sat in front of our lovely fire and caught up. The morning dawned and outside felt mild and un-winter like so we changed plans and headed up the quick scramble Pinnacle Ridge Route, as neither of us had done it before. After a leisurely afternoon, we settled back into base camp and chopped more wood for that night's fire. I love Helyg. It's the most atmospheric hut that I've stayed, set in a beautiful location with a great feel of history about the place, and best of all, a roaring fire. The morning of day two, and without an alpine start we got our winter bags on our backs and headed up to Craig Lloer, on hunt for some frozen turf routes. Although a lot of the small pools of water were frozen on the walk in, on arrival the turf wasn't in an acceptable condition to claim a justified ascent. The crag looked pretty wintery but that was as far as it went.   We headed back down hill and that was that. Even though it was not my best climbing trip to North Wales, it always feels good to be back there. Back up in Snowdonia early Feb for a couple of blocks of work and hoping for good hard freeze for then!
