I was working for www.rockandsun.com this weekend, out on the Pembrokeshire sea cliffs. Alex was on an learn to lead course, having done a lot of sport climbing but not trad' climbed before. We had a day of getting to understand what sea cliff trad' climbing is all about; weather, tides, sea state, anchors, equalising gear, safeguarding abseils, twin rope belaying, climbing calls, retrievable abseils, judgement and decision making. Alex took it all in his stride and we got five routes done in three different areas, giving him a good idea of what's involved with trad' climbing adventures. The second day, it was over to Alex, as he lead climbed (with a top rope in place) and I seconded him, checking his gear placements and anchor set-ups. With my confidence in his skills growing and growing, it was time to set him loose on his first real lead, a VS 4b, onsite and a solid, confident performance. Well done Alex!
